What we Believe

A BRIEF HISTORY OF
HOLY TRINITY CONGREGATION

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was established by a small group of Slovak immigrants who in 1901 formed a congregation in Bridgeport , Connecticut — “The Church of the Holy Trinity.”  It has grown to the multi- ethnic congregation it is today.

In 1907, it was incorporated under the ministry of Rev. Daniel Bella as the Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Holy Trinity Congregation.  Worship was held at a nearby church building and in 1908 the congregation dedicated its own first church building, still standing, on the southeast corner of Grand Street and Madison Avenue.

By 1917, the parish outgrew this facility and under the ministry of Pastor Ludovit Karlovsky, construction of a new building was completed in 1918 on property across the street.  The existing house on the property became the parsonage.

Pastor J. Igor Bella led the congregation from 1924 until 1947.  The church joined the Slovak Zion Synod in 1945. During the years of World War II, over 150 of our members served in the armed forces.  Five members lost their lives in this war.  The congregation supported the wider community by purchasing a new ambulance for the Red Cross in 1941.

Pastor John Chalupa served the parish for 35 years from 1947 until his retirement in 1982. During his ministry, with a growing membership, the church added an education wing, transept and fellowship hall.  Our name was changed to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church .

In March of 1983, Pastor Andrew Mazak was installed and the church became part of the newly formed Evangelical Lutheran Church In America  (ELCA).

In 1990, Rev. Hans–Frederik Gustafson was called as pastor and under his leadership, the church undertook the relocation project that brought us to our present location in Trumbull in April, 1996.

In 2002, Pastor Linda Kraft was called to be the congregation’s 6th full time pastor and  God continues to bless us with her ministry.
